TWENTY ONE

Luca

I walked precariously into the seedy, empty bar, searching for a guy called Bud. I had $500 in my pocket and felt more scared and out of place than a calf who’s lost his mom on the ranch. The place stunk of stale cigarettes and fresh piss, likely embedded in the crappy furniture.

“I’m looking for Bud,” I asked the bartender, holding back the shakiness in my voice.

Without saying a word, the bartender pointed his chin to the far corner where a creepy guy sat smoking a short cigarette and glaring at me like I was a piece of meat.

Sidestepping a yellow pool of something on the floor, I moved to his booth in the far corner and asked if he was Bud.

“And you’re Lucy?”

“Luca.”

“Huh. I thought that was a boy’s name.”

“It is. My mom named me after her favorite actress’s son.”

“And who’s that?”

“Audrey Hepburn.”

“You’re named after a boy. Weird, ‘cos you sure don’t look like a boy from where I’m sitting.” He pointed to the bench opposite him for me to sit. I glanced at the state of the seat and squirmed as I sat down on a brown stain. “You got the money?”

I nodded.

“Let me see it.”

I took out the roll of fifty-dollar bills and placed it on the sticky table between us and he snatched it quick to count it. “There’s only five hundred here,” he growled.

“Half now, half when the job is done. You think I’m stupid enough to give you the whole amount at once.”

He sniggered, blowing smoke into my face. “Where are you from?”

“I’d rather not say.”

He tapped his finger on the table looking me over. “Are you sure about this? Say now or forever hold your peace.”

“Yes, I’m sure. You have to make it look like an accident. Can you do that?”

“I can do anything for the right price. When?”

“Over the next two days. Must be done before Saturday.”

“Alright. Deal. You just keep wandering about your normal life, completely unaware, alright?”

I nodded. “Thank you. Um, if you haven’t done it by Saturday, I’ll find someone who will.”

“Don’t you worry lil’ lady, I’ll get it done. Like I said, just keep on keeping on none the wiser.”

I got up and walked away from him, feeling so frightened and alone with no one to turn to.

“Oh ah,” he called after me.

I turned back to him.

“Which side? Left or right?”

“Left.”

“Alright, left it is.”

I stepped out of that dank pisshole, greeted by bright sunlight and a clear blue sky. Further down the road, someone was blaring Lil Nas X from their parked car and a bunch of kids were laughing as they cruised by on their skateboards. I tried to soak in the happiness surrounding me, but I felt so lost in grief. I gave that man everything in my bank account which was the grand sum $500 and I had nothing left to buy groceries. The full cost of the filthy exploit is $1000, which I was supposed to give to him today. Luckily, I’m no fool and when Bud comes through for me and I will pay him what’s owed.
